Luapula heritage is rich with many water features and pre-historic sites.
Ntumbachushi waterfalls
Loc@ted along Ng’ona river on the Muchinga Escarpment, near Kawambwa Boma. The waterfalls has 60 metres in length and a vertical drop of 30 metres.
Upstream there are 5 cataracts and 8 natural pools, while there are 2 cataracts downstream.
Lumangwe/ Kabwelume/ Chimpempe falls complex
The world class Lumangwe, Kabwelume and Chimpempe falls are successful falls on the Kalungwishi river. It is on the boarder of Luapula and Northern provinces.
The five waterfalls are within 5km and there are also some spectacular rapids found along the river.
The Lumangwe falls has a height of 30-40m and a with of 160m, a “mini Victoria falls”. It is 94km from Mporokoso district.
The Kabwelume falls is multi-tiered, multi-segmented, and it’s name is derived from male hard rock . It had a height of 25 metres and a width of over 100m.
The Chimpempe falls: Chimpempe meaning “something overhanging or sticking out”.
Mombututa falls
The name means water that thunders and it is at the confluence of the Mumbotuta streams and Luapula River. It is loc@ated 44km from Milenge Boma, Luapula province.
The area is suitable for picnicking, camping, rafting and surfing.
Kasamba Stream/ Samfya grinding grooves
It is a National Heritage site of man made milling and grinding grooves. It is dated to the Iron Age.
Munwa stream rock engravings
This historical site features engravings, each of which lies within Mwense Area. For those of you who are planning to visit Zambia this coming season for a holiday, it is such an incredible historical center to explore.
