Zambia is located in Southern Central Africa. Zambia is the 17th largest country in Africa that stretches over an area of 752,614 km2 (290,584 sq mi). The larger part of the country’s land is on a high undulating plateau (flat land) with hills and valleys in some places. The hills and valleys found in the Eastern and Southern parts of the country form part of the Great Rift Valley whose southern-most point is in the Zambezi valley.

The country lies between 300 and 2,000 metres above sea level with the lowest point being the Zambezi river at 329 metres (1,078 ft.) above sea level while the highest point is on Mafinga Central in the Manfiga Hills which stands at 2,339 metres (7,674 ft) above sea level. Due to the country’s generally high flat land, Zambia a pleasant savannah climate which has beautiful sceneries of tropical grasslands which are habitat to a lot of wild animals, including Africa’s Big Five.

Zambia’s population was projected to be 18 million in 2018 with an average growth rate of 3.0% per annum. The country has a relatively low population density of 24 people per square meter. The majority of the inhabitants in Zambia are Bantu. There are 73 ethnic groups in Zambia all of which speak Bantu languages and from these, 7 languages are the most widely spoken across different regions of the country namely, Nyanja, Bemba, Tonga, Lozi, Kaonde, Lunda and Luvale.
